Japanese mahjong, also known as Riichi mahjong, is a popular variant of the ancient Chinese game. It's played by four players, and the goal is to complete a valid hand (four sets of three and a pair) while also earning points based on the hand's specific characteristics (yakus) and dora tiles. The game has unique rules like Riichi and Furiten, which significantly influence the way players strategize and play, making it more strategic and less reliant on luck than some other mahjong variants.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:

Key Features of Riichi Mahjong:

  • Four Players: The game is designed for four players, each with a unique hand.

  • Tile Sets: The game uses standard mahjong tiles, including suits (circles, sticks, characters), wind tiles (east, south, west, north), and dragon tiles (white, green, red).

  • Hand Formation: Players must form a hand of four sets of three tiles and a pair.

  • Yakus (Hand Characteristics): Different hand combinations (patterns) are worth a certain number of "han", which determine the points earned.

  • Dora (Bonus Tiles): Special tiles (red 5s or gold 5s) are used to add to the hand's value, increasing the points.

  • Riichi (Declaration): A player can declare Riichi to increase the chances of winning and also reduce the risk of other players winning from a discard.

  • Furiten (Hand Discard): A player cannot win from a tile that they have discarded previously, adding a strategic layer to the game.

  • Scoring: The game uses a complex point system based on han, fu, and other factors to determine the winner.

  • Strategic Gameplay: Riichi mahjong requires players to consider both their own hands and their opponents' actions, making it a game of strategy and skill.
